WD HD is read only mode Anonymous 17/07/12(Wed)09:47 No. 22486 ID: 494c89 [Reply]

I have a Western Digital My Passport Ultra. I was going to back up my stuff the other day, but unfortunately my hard drive is in read only mode for some reason. I tried reformatting it into various partition types but it still throws this error.

Any idea what to do? Reddit's tech support sub is closed for the goddamn protest today, and I have to work for the next five days.

In the future don't buy an hd+case from a manufacturer. Whether Seagate, WD, or Toshiba, they all fucking suck donkey balls and are unreliable as fuck.

More than likely your case is in read only mode because its bridge board suffered some kind of colossal failure, which is annoyingly common on Seagate & WD cases. Extra fun is that many manufacturer cases come with proprietary USB-only drives inside, so you can't just crack it open and transplant it to a normal third party case - the controller ends in a USB port.

If you're lucky its SATA and you can just buy a $15 or $20 case and use it for the 1-2 years before the case fails... and then buy another one for $15-$20. You could also spend $50+ and get a high case that would likely outlast the drive... but it could also fail in 1-2 years.

did you try the wd tools that came with the drive, load them off onto another usb drive. also, there are a large variety of of free tools on CNET, my favorite is minitools, allows for many variable rechanges

Free space fragmentation... Anonymous 17/09/17(Sun)19:42 No. 22497 ID: 4ae916 [Reply]

I'm using Perfectdisk Pro. 13.0 and have a large amount of free space fragmentation on my system drive.
I've tried a boot defrag and am currently consolidating free space before I defragment again using their S.M.A.R.T system. but I've done this before and still had the same issue.
Any idea how to remedy this?
(I'm not opposed to using another defragmenter then using PD again)

Anonymous 17/10/08(Sun)10:17 No. 22498 ID: cab8d4

An honest question here. Given that Perfectdisk hasn't been popular since the days when VAX systems were popular, why have there been two posts on /halp/ referencing it in the past couple months? It's weird. It'd be like discussing TeraTerm, a terminal program for Windows that hasn't been updated since Windows NT 4.

Did you guys penetrate their network and install a payload in their software?

I already have a Desktop. Need a laptop that can be bought cheap but then upgraded. I'd like to be able to upgrade the graphics card, hard drive, processor and RAM. I don't mind how bulky it is, I just want to be able to change its hardware and be able to play games in as best graphics as possible when I'm away. I looked up some thinkpads but I can't find anything like this.

What you probably want is a business or enterprise laptop, which are typically still fully upgradeable (with the exception of the video card).

If you want to upgrade it cheaply look for laptops that use SATA drives and not PCIe storage, as PCIe storage is typically implemented in a proprietary or soldered-on fashion. M.2 exists but for some reason a lot of laptops are going the proprietary route (probably for the same reason as Apple - planned obsolescence). Maybe licensing costs? Dunno.

If you stick with business and enterprise equipment there's usually a lot of technical documentation available including FRU (Field Replaceable Unit) which basically means parts that companies IT can replace themselves if they buy it from the manufacturer. When you poke around those docs you can determine what hardware is actually inside the system.

1. Will my Asus Z170 Pro Gaming/Aura mobo boot from an NVMe M.2-PCIe 3.0 SSD? NVMe isn't even referenced anywhere in the manual, so I don't have a good feeling about it.

2. Is it really that likely that I'll have to clock my 3000MHz DDR4 down to auto/2133MHz for it to play nice with NVMe, as I've read is sometimes the case?

3. If booting from an NVMe drive isn't possible, are AHCI M.2-PCIe or AHCI M.2-SATA cards worth the expense, or should I just get a 1.8"/2.5" AHCI SATA SSD?

4. Oh, and Windows 10 does have decent native NVMe drivers now, right?

5. Lastly, is migrating my Win10 install from HDD to SDD just a simple matter of creating a partition table on the SDD and cloning the partition over from the HDD?

Sorry for the fuckload of questions.

That's Office 2010 in the picture, that's why it looks like windows 7, if you install it on Windows 10 it looks like that too, but i don't know of any office 2010 themes for office 2016

This highly useful addition to both Firefox and Pale moon has stopped working.
I am running firefox 43.0.1 and Palemoon 27.2.0 and have tried both 2.0.19 and 2.0.18.1-signed.1-let-fixed with shit results.
Is there anything that will allow me to download images / pdf's etc as easily?

Have you considered running an ESR release of Firefox and a current version of DownThemAll?

Why are you interested in ensuring your system gets infected?

First timer building a water cooled rigid tubing rig here. Doing CPU/GPU.

I'm stuck on the plumbing of the rig, and planning exactly what I need to order:

>How do I plan a loop out properly?

>How do I know exactly what fittings to order?

>What is the best tubing ID/OD size?

>How will I know exactly how many fittings to order?

>How do I get light blue or purple fluid?

>Is UV fluid worth the hassle? Can I get it in light blue or purple?

Basically this.

If you don't know what you're doing, buy liquid cooling kits that include all the necessary parts of the appropriate sizes to secure the system in place.

Once you get comfortable seeing how it all works and fits together then you can move onto advanced topics like one large radiator with tubing looped between all the parts in the system.

You can use EKWB loop planner tool, it will tell you exact amount of fittings you need, and all other parts. Very simple yet effective tool for first timers to help avoid missing parts.

https://pcworld365.com/best-gaming-laptops-under-300-dollars.html

I'd pick something with a core CPU rather than a celeron or pentium, if you're going with intel. AMD's APUs are also worth a look as they used to have good graphics performance (I haven't checked in a while)

example
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J42JPL4/
(acer isn't exactly a great brand I'd recommend, but I'm just giving an example)
then you check the graphics are intel hd graphics 520 and google for tf2 performance
http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/request-team-fortress-2-fps-on-intel-hd-graphics-520.792764/
or check on youtube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZDRfa2k1SQ

you may have to shop around and look at features. (do you need touch? screen size etc)

Anonymous 17/03/03(Fri)22:05 No. 22450 ID: 1d7577

If you're looking for a basic laptop for work and general usage get an Intel CPU.
If you're looking for a basic "gaming" laptop get an AMD-APU.

>>22449
AMD's APUs are great if you're on a budget, I built my current desktop using A10-7700k and it's run everything I've thrown at it (in 720p with mid-high settings). If you're building a desktop with one it'll be more expensive if you shell out for a discreet graphics card in the future but at least you can game while you saving for one; personally, I spotted an R7-250 for $30 and cross-fired it with my APU for a noticeable improvement over the APU alone. The big thing to note with APUs is RAM speed is crucial, the difference between 1600 and 2133 is a good 15-20fps.

Anonymous 17/03/04(Sat)06:50 No. 22451 ID: 448961

Intel laptops will generally have better CPUs and weaker GPUs than AMD laptops.

However most tasks are being offloaded to GPU now and CPUs reached the "fast enough" stage around the time of Core2. As a result unless you're doing something really CPU intensive like compressing video you're unlikely to notice the weaker CPU, while you will notice the GPU being slower in just about everything else. Even Windows/Linux offloads functions to the GPU.

The problem is $300 is just too low for anything except an Intel Atom or Celeron, with a bottom of the barrel barely functional crippled GPU. There's a lot of Chromebooks down that low, but you probably won't want to live with ChromeOS on hardware that's basically the same (Atom or Celeron).

If you're willing to go refurbished there are some better options, although some of them are rather long in the tooth...

If you need a better understanding of any laptop with minimal information like that one, just punch its model number into Google, someone will list better information on it.
