Long Term Data Storage Anonymous 16/08/22(Mon)07:30 No. 22161 ID: 0101d3 [Reply]

File 147184382872.jpg - (139.49KB , 960x320 , datacenter_triinti[1].jpg )

Hello /halp/, it's been awhile

I built a NAS not too long ago with 20TB of HDD space in a RAID6 configuration, for 12TB of usable space. Recently, SOMETHING happened to it. Nothing technically wrong with it, just that is was taken and I may or may not be getting it back.

This situation has led me to question online cloud archive backup services for long term (cold) storage. I had roughly 7-8TB, of which I cared about long term preservation of about 4.5TB (lets call it 5TB to be safe). The retrieval rate would be the entire archive less than once per few years. The storage length would be from now until I die.

My question is this: What would you suggest for long term, high capacity, personal online data storage? I would also like some forward secrecy, so if a subpoena is ever issued, the data would remain safe.

BackBlaze and CrashPlan both advertise to be good solutions, however the "1 price for unlimited storage" makes me question their funding, especially in the face of massive amounts of data like this. Not only that but they seem to be for personal PC backups rather than archive solutions. Amazon Glacier also seems like a good idea for long term storage, however the price is much higher.

Any ideas? BackBlaze? Crashplan? Amazon Glacier? Microsoft Azure? Google Cloud? Oracle?

No US-based provider is going to bat an eye at a subpoena. When served with a national security letter, which TLAs regularly abuse, they not only have to turn over your data, they also can't say they were served or that your data was turned over.

Data stored in a foreign country opens you up to the NSA, since once its in the hands of a foreign national they can do whatever they want since it's one of their reasons for existence. You would have to put the data in the hands of a US citizen living in that country to avoid that loophole.

How about three NAS arrays. One that's live, another that's offline but containing data recently backed up from the NAS, and a third that's offsite. The offsite is periodically swapped with the offline NAS. offline and offsite can technically both be offsite, but #2 needs to be more readily accessible, while #3 could be buried in a hole in the woods. Perhaps someplace you infrequently visit, like a relatives home, assuming you can store it there w/o arousing suspicion or even awareness its existence.

So yesterday I bought an iPhone 5s from a guy, not knowing it was iCloud locked. I am now stuck with the phone and have been watching videos all day on how to unlock it and got no luck. Someone please help😢

You won't be able to unlock it.
The cloud is linked to the phone. Even if you formatted the phone and reinstalled the firmware the same cloud would still be connected to it.

MKV's with subs to AVI or Mp4 Anonymous 16/06/06(Mon)04:40 No. 22105 ID: 2214da [Reply]

Hey I have a bunch of MKV's I want to convert so I can burn em on blu rays and use in my player or play on USB on my TV an have run into a coupel of problems. MKV's that won't convert in Format Factory or AVS Video Converter.
(I usually use FF for non-subbed stuff.)
I get the following error on FF Error 0x00000001
and on AVS either "file format error " or not mkv file. (whihc it is)
any suggestions?

I normally convert MKVs to M4Vs so I can use them pretty much everywhere on every device, unlike MKVs. I've included subtitles too, though MP4 only allows a single subtitle track so if you want multiples you'll have to general a subtitle file somehow for the 2nd and later subs. I never cared that much though which is why I only know a single subtitle works.

check that the container really is mkv
sometimes people mislabel their file extensions (used to be very common on file sharing networks)
if you're using mpc-hc, go to file properties, then go to the mediainfo tab
the file container should be under format (below 'complete name' and 'above file size')
you can also use mediainfo

if the extension matches, sometimes there's corruption. versatile media players will get around those (and also ignore file extensions if necessary), but media encoders may not.
one way to try this is do a lossless stream copy. you could try it with ffmpeg, but if you're queasy about using the command line, use something like xmedia recode.
format: matroska video
then drag and drop your file. make sure you click on the filename at the top. the video and audio tabs should appear.
under video tab, for mode, pick Copy
under audio tab, for mode, pick Copy
idk if you have subtitles or not, but you can work it out
then click add to queue and click encode
it should rip out the audio and video streams and properly rebuild them into a new mkv file. this is pretty fast because it's just copying the streams without encoding anything. hopefully your output (which should be in your videos folder) will be readable in whatever next encoder you use

While recovering from some malware I managed to fuck up my hard drive permissions.
How do I take ownership of each volume including the system?
I am in an admin account but I I can't do things like create text files in my C: dive.
and constantly need to "approve" of moving files from one drive to another. (I have 3)

You're better off performing an upgrade installation of 7 Home, because you'll never get the permissions correct. There are special permissions all over the boot drive, from program files to programdata to windows to users... there's not going to be just one place set-it-and-done.

Upgrading it will refresh the permissions on the boot drive back to where they should be.

With your other drives you can just adjust their permissions though, provided you haven't moved program files or something else over there.

Have you considered, I dunno, contacting the police? Restraining orders are wonderful things, when he violates them there are consequences for him. Repeated violations lead to more serious consequences.

Hey 7chan, I wanted to make a memorial script to dedicate something regarding Muhammed Ali's death by making a .vbs script to play a song, but I was thinking on writing it also in multiple languages as well to accomodate it along with it, and not just in English.

Does anyone here know if it's possible to change dialog into different languages as well, if it's supportable? I run a Windows 10 computer, and here's what my script looks like:

Msgbox "May you rest in peace our dear conquestor"

Msgbox "RIP Muhammed Ali 1942-2016"

Msgbox "Your deeds will always be remembered..."

Msgbox "Rest in peace guardian angel"

Dim oPlayer
Set oPlayer = CreateObject("WMPlayer.OCX")

boost to router signal - distance Anonymous 16/01/20(Wed)05:07 No. 22024 ID: 34334b [Reply]

Boosting router signal.
I got a new router and it has an internal antenna and it seems to have much weaker signal strength/ range than the previous model I used that is about 7 years older.
It's a D-LINK DIR-820L.
it has no place outside for an external antenna but I was wondering if I could boot the signal
with something like a USB WIFI Wireless Adaptor network card or something like this?
http://www.dx.com/p/mini-netsys-500mw-802-11b-g-n-usb-2-0-300mbps-wi-fi-wireless-network-adapter-w-20dbi-antenna-100436#.Vp7jW7FiShM

Any suggestions?

Oh. That's what you meant. No, you can't plug a USB NIC into the router and have the router use the NIC. You could use the NIC with your desktop or laptop to get better reception there.

I feel your pain about unused purchases. Last month I ordered a piece of equipment and had it shipped to another site for a coworker to use since he said he desperately needed it. I asked someone to go into his office today since he was out and we needed something in there, and the shipping box was sitting in there unopened. Well, we could use it, so I had it brought over. What do I find? Straight out of the box one of the power adapters is broken. Something we could have had replaced for free if he'd have opened the box when it came in or shortly thereafter, not six weeks later.

A reflector, so long as it's tuned for the RF ranges in question, could certainly work, although it will also result in a completely dead spot behind the reflector.

By way of comparison, with an N66, I can join from over 100ft away. Keep in mind an entire apartment building is sitting between those two points. As in, I'm in the corner of an apartment building, there's a dividing section (walkway, grass, etc.) between buildings, and on the other side of the other side of that building I can join my network. And there's wireless networks in that building, plus all around me. This is the power of good engineering though, as others have pointed out, properly choosing the correct channel(s) for your network is key given your surrounding. Only by walking around with a WiFi surveyor can you get a decent sense of how the WiFi networks look, though you won't see non-WiFi intrusions (security cameras, baby monitors, cordless phones, everything that uses 5Ghz & 2.4Ghz that doesn't use the WiFi standard to connect).

Look for open-source firmware.

I use tomato router on all my legacy linksys routers, you can boost the signal to the hardware max, something like 300% the out of box setting. If your hardware isn't supported by the tomato project, find another firmware dev, or choose another router that is supported by a firmware you like

Realtek SoC means little third party support. That's something to look into before buying a unit, not after, since there's plenty of SoCs that lack support.

Noctua's low noise adapter on my AF120s reduce the speed correctly when plugged into a 3pin header but they usually need to be hand started. I don't have different fans to use, and the only other header is for the cpu fan. I guess it's not awfully important to have it in since the only thing inside is a 2600k, but there aren't any other fans inside.
Wat do halp

Anonymous 16/06/01(Wed)17:25 No. 22102 ID: 87065d

Low noise adapters are basically a wire with a resistor in series.

Buy a basic extender, splice in a variable resistor and you can adjust the speed-voltage to what you want. Alternatively buy a pci-fan controller for £3.00 and save yourself the effort. Slot it in the pci bracket, plug in the power and fan, presto. My case came with a basic controller (low/med/high) on low one of my fans doesn't start so I leave it at medium unless I desire the airflow or silence.
