It's fairly simple, actually. You need a ketone to react with two molecules of a formamide and that reaction will give you a formyl derivative of an amine. Should you desire to take it a step further and make it even more effective you need to hydrolyze it with hydrochloric acid and then you get the final product (any water in the mixture will destroy the entire product so you should absolutely avoid it at all costs).
However…phenylacetone is illegal to purchase and if you have it in your possession and get caught it is enough to get you prosecuted.
There is a solution to this dilemma and that is to produce phenylacetone from hydratropic aldehyde and you can buy it from perfumers. After that then all you need is some sulfuric acid and a glass container.

1) 400 ml of sulfuric acid in the glass container
2) Cool the sulfuric acid down to -16° C
3) While stirring, add 90 grams of hydratropic aldehyde over a period of one hour
4) If the temperature falls below -16° C then the reaction mixture will fail and you can't convert the hydratropic aldehyde into phenylacetone
5) If done properly you can extract about 60 ml of phenylacetone from this concoction

If you want to make a good batch it is necessary to purchase the right precursor chemicals and essential chemicals. Usually it's easy because some websites that are targeting hobbyists can provide you with certain ingredients. You could, as an example, stumble upon a soap making store. There you can buy potassium hydroxide (which is used when someone is manufacturing soft soaps) and with it you can break up polymers that are found in Sudafed or ephedrine pills.
Also, when you are "cooking", you need to dispose of cyanide waste. This can be done by using bleach. The ultimate bleach you can acquire is 15% hypochlorite solution and ordinary pool suppliers sell it so there is no worries about transaction.


1) Add an equal amount of sodium hydroxide to your container of cyanide waste.
2) Add water to this mixture so you create a solution.
3) After that you slowly, while stirring constantly, pour in about 4 volumes of bleach to the cyanide solution.
4) You are done. The whole process will generate plenty of heat so when the container starts steaming you should let the liquid cool down.

The only negative aspect about it is that there might be regulations on selling allylbenzene to customers.

Chemistry is cool, but not if you have to do time for your innocent little hobby. Just go where it's decriminalized and buy some and use some, problem solved. As another poster on rx mentioned, that shit is mostly legal to get in many south american countries. Think with your head guys. Ur talking speed here. You can get pharma grade shit and probably even choose if it's d or l racemic. I mean, you can definitely get a mix, maybe even isolated D or l, I don't know, I've never done speed in my life. And unfortunately I live in a country where it's hard to get pharma grade speed. Otherwise I would have tried it a long time ago. But I suppose I'm more interested in psychedelics, so I just kind of didn't have a rush to And I don't want to take street stuff for many reasons.

But neither I want to go to jail for years and years just because I want to try speed.
Having a small temporary lab to extract some obscure psychedelic I can justify, not this.
