Anyone else remember Magicka?

Nowadays it's a rather obscure game abandoned by those who worked on it, but back in it's prime it was "relatively" popular amongst nerds and Horry Pooter foons. It had gameplay somewhat reminiscent of Diablo or Gauntlet (which Arrowhead actually remade in 2014), It's actually a pretty impressive project considering how it was made by a couple of college bros on their spare time. I'd honestly recommend it if you're patient enough to deal with the constant bugs and crashes, or are into nerd culture somewhat.

How could I forget? It's one of the greatest co-op games of all time. It's up there with Castle Crashers in replayability and classic status. I seriously don't understand how it wasn't a bigger hit with there being multiple gamemodes and how easy it was to play with friends. It was a pretty funny game too. Yeah it has literal reddit humor (and I do mean that literally, pretty sure there are a few explicit references to the site), but outside of that the humor still holds up. The dynamic combat was also amazing. Being able to mix and match spells to create your own playstyle was sweet (although people often just would use arcane, fire, lightning and beam down anyone who got in their way). While I understand why they decided to follow it up with Wizard Wars, it wasn't nearly as good as 1 (mostly because of having to constantly balance spells, which 1 didn't need to for the most part). I have 2 in my library and haven't ever played it, but I hear it's like 1 but even worse. I think partially because whatever balance changes they made in WW, they kept in 2 (making a lot of combos weaker).

I think a lot of games simply don't care about making it easy to hop in and play with friends anymore, except for the the new "friendfarming" genre like Lethal Company and most recently R.E.P.O. It's a shame, really. It also SUCKS that the final Magicka update on Steam broke it so you have to roll it back to the update before if you want to play with friends. Also the CTD spell was hilarious to use in high-stress situations. Magicka really is a case of, "they sure don't make them how they used to."

Tell me, what prompted you to play them? Mainly their genre or the innovation they could offer their genres?

Ps. I ask this question because lately I wonder what is the component that makes an indie beautiful. Innovation in gameplay? The graphics? Or just the story?

Can it be a good game for just 1 of these components? Ex, it can be good a game whose graphics and gameplay are shitty, but is the story as good as an MGS?

I've always been interested in the process of game development, I like all sorts of processes but videogames are special, they are a vessel for all other arts.
Corporate made videogames feel sterile, often engineered to handhold you instead of challenging yo, some are insultingly intrusive. Indie games are experimental, unsupervised, some at least.

No lie, LOVE it. I try to tell people about it, and describe it. Inevitably, the only vaguely interesting response I sometimes get is, "OH SO IT'S LIKE TOUHOU?" Retarded argument because I refuse to buy that rancid shit on principle. I've abandoned my Steam account also on principle despite there being a few k worth of "bought" games there. Not to mention all the CDs and DVDs I actually own. There is literally nothing morally wrong with unauthorised copying nowadays unless it's a small developer that is actually working for himself and passionate about what video games. Obviously this leads you into quos custodes territory which is best avoided, but corps can go fuck themselves with an AIDS-infected barbed wire bat.
