Not gonna be a CS update this month; lost alot of time in August to family stuff (the good kind!) and commissions, and I've been braindead the last couple days.

That'd be Ax, an alien from the book series "Animorphs" called and Andalite. They invented shapeshifting technology that operates by 'acquiring' DNA by touching other animals. His big brother gave the ability to a bunch of kids to help them fight off an invasion of body-snatching alien slugs before being eaten alive.
The kids would go on to be very successful child-soldiers and commit a non-zero number of War Crimes.

While I have never read a line of the Animorphs books, I have heard them complimented on their treatment of the effect of war on young minds. And of the fact that wars don't usually end cleanly, bad guys dead, problem solved. A "win" means the *immediate* problem is solved, but perfect justice usually isn't on the table.

Plus, apparently shapeshifting there is a *gruesome* power, you can feel your internal organs getting torn apart and healed in a different shape.)

Animorphs is seriously a good series. Even for adults it actually holds up surprisingly well with serious reflection on what it means to fight in war and what it does to those who fight and what you have to sacrifice. Is it perfect? No, but it's closer to it than you'd think for a YA/children's series from Scholastic.
It didn't try to talk down to its audienceand pretend they weren't already aware of evil in the world, and that's always a good sign in a YA series.

I don’t think I’ll ever forget the one animorphs book where a character gets swatted as a fly and the rest of the team has to scrape him off the wall and carry him to the bathroom so he can demorph before he dies

Same guy got ripped in half as an orca in another book!
In another one Rachel (the blonde one in the pic) almost gets sexually assaulted, turns halfway into an elephant to scare them off, then gets yelled at by Jake (the fly guy) for endangering THEM!
It's such a good series.

If I had money, I would pay Mister D. for a commission based on Animorphs too.
Especially because Chris Grine (the guy who drew the graphic novels) has an art style I'd describe as "Mister D, but with less talent".
And because the graphic novels had yet to inspire ANY new Animorphs Rule 34.
