1959 was the year that DC introduced the Supergirl from Krypton. The character would subsequently be known to all as Kara Zor-El Linda Lee Danvers.

In response DC's rival Marvel Comics introduced in 1977, Ms. Marvel who would subsequently be known to all as Carol Car-Ell Susan Jane Danvers.

HOWEVER, it was the writer Dave Thorpe who ORIGINATED the designation and with it the confirmation that the mainstream Marvel Universe is but one universe in a bigger multiverse.
