I just got my degree in Accounting. I've been applying to smaller firms and already have multiple interviews setup and from what it looks like I'll probably get a couple offers in the following weeks. There was a massive amount of pressure on the accounting students to apply for internships at the big four firms while they were still in school. I didn't do that for multiple reasons.

Big four firms make you apply for internships 1-2 years in advance. What the fuck is the reason for this? How is it dissimilar to a normal new hire processing / onboarding? I would love for pic related lady at any big four firm to explain this to me.

Secondly, they make the application process a bureaucratic hell. Not an exaggeration to call it a humiliation ritual. Expect to spend 8 hours repeating stuff that's already on your resume. You gotta get the "official transcript" too. Your school will let you download the "unofficial transcript" for free, instantly, but no, you have to pay a third party company $80 to have your transcript emailed to you in 2-4 weeks.

You also have to glaze them so hard. Expect to fill out 4-6 required field text prompts telling them why you're so excited to work for accounting megacorporation #123. Also cover letters. Fuck cover letters, they should be called glaze letters. They expect you to write lies for 2-3 pages about why you want to work at x firm, as if everyone's answer isn't "I need income"

Finally, these motherfuckers will put you through atleast 3, up to 5 interviews, each interview potentially lasting 4 hours.

Applying to smaller firms has been so much more easily entreated. It's not humiliating.
