It is not, nor has it ever been, profitable. It used to cost substantially more to run back in the mid 2000's through early 2010's though, and depended on many donors both large and small. Now we see not even the tiniest fraction of traffic that we did back then, and hosting costs have come down as well making it less burdensome to continue running.
