And of the fact that wars don't usually end cleanly, bad guys dead, problem solved. A "win" means the *immediate* problem is solved, but perfect justice usually isn't on the table.

Animorphs is seriously a good series. Even for adults it actually holds up surprisingly well with serious reflection on what it means to fight in war and what it does to those who fight and what you have to sacrifice. Is it perfect? No, but it's closer to it than you'd think for a YA/children's series from Scholastic.
It didn't try to talk down to its audienceand pretend they weren't already aware of evil in the world, and that's always a good sign in a YA series.
